The Role of Lasers in the Treatment of Hyperpigmentation and Melasma

LUÑA I Ray – Aesthetic Machine

Melasma is a very common hyperpigmentation disorder that appears mainly in women (90% of cases!), and more so at a young age. It appears as dark, symmetrical, irregular-edged patches, generally in the facial area.

What types are there?

Melasma is mainly classified into three categories, depending on the depth of pigment: superficial, deep or mixed.

Laser treatment for melasma is highly effective, although it requires certain considerations to maximize its benefits:

  • Multiple Sessions: Several initial sessions and long-term maintenance are usually required.

  • Rigorous Photoprotection: Sun protection before and after treatment is essential.

  • Variety of Techniques: There are options such as Q-switched lasers, fractionated non-ablative, and pulsed light, adapting to each case.

  • Low Energy: Low energies are used to avoid excessive inflammation that could worsen the condition.

  • Combined therapy: studies show that laser treatment of melasma achieves better results when combined with depigmenting treatments at home or in the doctor’s office (peelings), which include active ingredients such as hydroquinone, kojic acid, azelaic acid, retinoic acid or tranexamic acid, among others. The combination with oral tranexamic acid also achieves very good results.
